An 89-year-old bridge that spans from Missouri to Illinois is expected to be replaced by fall 2019.
Missouri Department of Transportation Project Director Keith Killen says the new bridge replacing Champ Clark Bridge will have nearly 4-meter wide lanes with 3-meter shoulders. It will also be elevated to avoid flooding issues.
The bridge will connect Pike County, Missouri, to Pike County, Illinois.
The project will cost about $68.2 million. The states will split the cost and apply a $10 million federal grant to the project.
Every day, about 4,000 vehicles cross the Champ Clark Bridge, which was built in 1928.
In recent years the bridge has been shut down due to maintenance issues. It often floods on Illinois' side during periods of high water.
