Rauner, Cullerton Point Blame for Budget Impasse

Illinois’ top political leaders continue to blame each other for the nearly two-year-long budget impasse.  Democratic Senate President John Cullerton held a press conference this week after Republicans wouldn’t take a vote to end the budget stalemate.  Cullerton said Governor Bruce Rauner doesn’t understand what it takes to pass a bill.

"I tried to explain that you have to get people, this isn’t the private sector where I just go around firing people if they don’t vote for something. I convince them to vote for it."

Rauner responded to that criticism today.

"Emotions run high and sometimes people run into the press and make statements. It’s probably not particularly productive but it’s ok. This is a difficult process."

Rauner then blamed Cullerton and the House Speaker for driving up the state’s debt.
