Durbin Opposes Muslim-Majority Countries Immigration Halt

The US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals is hearing oral arguments today on the legality of President Trump’s executive order halting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries.  Illinois’ senior U.S. Senator continues to express his opposition to the action.

Democrat Dick Durbin takes issue with President Trump’s statements on the campaign trail calling for a Muslim immigration ban, and recent comments on a Christian television network calling for preferential treatment of Christian refugees.

“These statements during the campaign and on that Christian broadcasting show are inconsistent with who we are as Americans.

Durbin says he saw the effects of the order first hand on a visit to a gathering of Muslims in suburban Chicago over the weekend.

“And to see the look in their eyes as they realized that this Executive Order is saying ‘we want no more Muslim children like those who’ve gathered here in Villa Park.”

Durbin dismissed comparisons between this Executive Order and previous orders from the Obama administration on immigration…  simply saying they were “different.”
