Durbin Votes Against Trump's Attorney General Nominee

Illinois U-S Senator Dick Durbin today voted against President Donald Trump's pick for Attorney General. Brian Mackey reports.

Durbin, like many Democrats, is critical of Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions on a variety of topics, from whether he'd thoroughly investigate Russian interference in last year's election to his past support of restrictive voting laws.

But he was most animated talking about the president's recent executive order temporarily barring refugees from coming to America. The Washington Post has reported that several Trump officials responsible for the ban have deep ties to Sessions.

DURBIN: "To suggest that he did not have influence or impact on the issuance of these orders is misleading."

Despite Durbin and every other Democrat voting no, the Republican-controlled Judiciary Committee approved sending Sessions' nomination to the full Senate.

Brian Mackey formerly reported on state government and politics for NPR Illinois and a dozen other public radio stations across the state. Before that, he was A&E editor at The State Journal-Register and Statehouse bureau chief for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.
