CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police are ramping up their presence at a city Christmas market after a truck rammed into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin and killed at least nine people and injured about 50 others.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Monday that there is no threat to the Chicago area. He says foot and bike patrols will be added to the Christkindlmarket, as well as specialized units. The Christmas market is held each year in an outdoor plaza in downtown Chicago.

Guglielmi says the department is closely monitoring events in Berlin and is in "regular communication" with federal and international authorities.

A Berlin police spokesman tells The Associated Press that among the fatalities was the passenger of the truck, who died as paramedics treated him at the scene.
