Amendment to Ballot a “Massive Ordeal”

The Illinois Supreme Court has yet to make a decision on whether a constitutional amendment belongs on the ballot, even though election officials are set to certify the ballot tomorrow.

A lot goes into putting together an election.  Ken Menzel would know, he's the top attorney at the Illinois State Board of Elections.  He's talking about the mechanics like printing ballots and preparing voting machines.

"It's a massive, printing ordeal. They have to do all of their programming and ballot layout. And keep in mind that while election day isn't until November, late September is when mailed balloting starts."

Federal law requires ballots be sent to overseas and military voters by Sept. 23rd.  That can be complicated when there are outstanding questions about who, and what, should make it on the ballot.

Like a question that would allow voters to change how legislative districts are drawn. The Illinois Supreme Court is weighing whether the ballot question is constitutional.
