A Cook County judge is ordering the state of Illinois to reconsider adding irritable bowel syndrome to the list of conditions that can be treated with medical marijuana.
The suit was filed anonymously against the Illinois Department of Public Health. The anonymous man’s attorney, Michael Goldberg, says the condition can be painful and embarrassing.
GOLDBERG: There’s almost not a day that he doesn’t endure pain. And the pharmaceutical drugs that he’s been prescribed have terrible side effects, one of which is constipation which is one of the problems you have with irritable bowel syndrome.
Last week, a Cook County judge ordered the department of public health to reconsider adding migraine headaches to the approved list. A different judge has now ruled similarly for irritable bowel syndrome. But the state could still reject giving approval to both conditions.
