Board of Elections investigates Mautino campaign spending

Members of the Illinois State Board of Elections today took another step in their investigation of Auditor General Frank Mautino. They voted to ask for more information about his campaign spending, spending that Republicans have called excessive.

Campaign finance reports show Mautino, a Democrat, paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to Spring Valley Bank and a single service station. The election board gave Mautino’s old fundraising committee until July 1 to turn over more documentation.

Critics, like Republican Representative Grant Werhli of Naperville, says Mautino still hasn’t answered lawmakers’ questions about the spending.

"He needs to be reminded that he works for the Illinois General Assembly under Article 8 of the Illinois Constitution. He reports to the General Assembly and has so far been remiss to do so."

Mautino, a former Democratic state representative from Spring Valley, says today's decision narrows the inquiry. He says he’ll work to answer the remaining questions.
