Bloomington birthing center prepares to open

EA Architecture & Deisgn

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - The first freestanding birthing center in Illinois outside the Chicago area is slated to soon open in Bloomington.

The Bloomington-Normal Birthing Center is due to open this summer in a renovated child care center.

The site is owned by two local obstetricians and intended for women with low-risk pregnancies who want to give birth in a more home-like setting.

A certified nurse-midwife and registered nurse provide primary care, with a nearby hospital available should complications arise.

The state's other stand-alone birthing center opened in Berwyn in 2014.
