Illinois faces low risk of Zika virus transmission

Summer is coming to Illinois, and with it - the return of mosquitoes. This year it may also bring fear about the Zika virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes and has been linked to birth defects in South America.

There's good news for those concerned that Zika could soon have a local presence. Nirav Shah, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, says Illinoisans have little to fear.

“In Illinois the overall risk of Zika virus is very low. The mosquito that transmits Zika virus is not one that is known to be found in Illinois. The mosquito is not capable of surviving our very cold winters.”

Still, Shah says residents should take precautions to avoid being bitten. Mosquitoes in Illinois can carry other diseases, including the West Nile virus. Pregnant women should also avoid travel to places where Zika is prevalent.
