The U.S. Department of Labor is seeking people who worked at nuclear weapons sites and their families, because they may be eligible for medical benefits and other compensation.
Claims examiner Latrice White led an outreach event in Bridgeton Missouri today, and says the Department is hoping that word of mouth helps track everyone down.
“A lot of people in the area are not aware of our program. And we also want to make sure that people are aware of what exactly we do, how to file the claims, the application process.”
Many in the crowd were related to people who worked for Mallinckrodt during the years that it processed uranium for the Manhattan project. Others worked for contractors at nuclear sites like Weldon Spring.
The outreach event continues tomorrow at the International Union of Operating Engineers Hall in Bridgeton Missouri.
