Senator proposes hearsay exceptions for mentally impaired

National statistics show people with intellectual disabilities are more likely to be victims of violent crime than people with other kinds of disabilities. An Illinois state senator is proposing adding more protections for crime victims with mental impairments.

It's called a hearsay exception. Victims of physical or sexual abuse who have a brain injury or developmental disability would be allowed to have someone testify on their behalf in court.

Senator Julie Morrison of Deerfield sponsored the legislation. She says someone the victim confided in right after the assault could testify.

"So, it's very helpful to have someone who they have shared that information with to be able to provide that additional testimony."

Current law limits the hearsay exception to those with moderate to profound mental or developmental impairments.
