Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan easily won the Democratic primary in the 22nd District. Still, his closest opponent says he feels good about the results. Illinois Public Radio’s Michael Puente reports.

Jason Gonzales collected more than 65-hundred votes in Tuesday’s primary -- three times as many as Madigan’s last challenger four years ago. But the total fell well short of Madigan’s 15-thousand plus votes. Gonzales says Madigan attacked him in negative ads.

GONZALES: Speaker Madigan can’t run on his record because there’s a record because if he were to bring his real record into the light, it would in fact would be saddening to see the sorry state of our state.

Madigan, whose been in office for 45 years, did not hold an election event last night. His spokesman also could not be reached for comment.
