CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - The Champaign County Board of Review has affirmed its decision to put area hospital properties back on the tax rolls.
The board's decision affects Carle health system and Presence Covenant Medical Center.
An attorney for Carle says the health system will pay about $9 million in property taxes this year. Attorney Steven Pflaum says that's "way too high."
The decision stems from an Illinois 4th District Appellate Court ruling in January that a state law allowing hospitals to avoid taxes is unconstitutional. The ruling reopened a statewide dispute over whether hospitals should be exempt from paying millions of dollars in income taxes and property taxes to local governments.
The Illinois Department of Revenue is seeking further review of the issue from the state Supreme Court.
