Chicago to buy more than 20 all-electric buses

Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Chicago Transit Authority President Dorval Carter Jr. say the city plans to buy 20 to 30 more all-electric buses in the next few years.  The Chicago mayor says the effort marks his commitment to protecting the environment.

The new plan could cost between $30-million and $40-million for buses and charging systems. CTA says money for the plan would come from a combination of federal funding sources.

CTA began using two 40-foot all-electric buses in October 2014. The agency says it expects each electric bus to save $25,000 in fuel costs a year.

About 15% of CTA buses are hybrids using electric and clean-diesel power.
