Illinois Issues: Reducing the Prison Population

Governor Bruce Rauner is scheduled to meet with members of his criminal justice reform commission this morning. He's set a goal of reducing Illinois' prison population by 25 percent over the next decade.

Most conversations about crowded prisons begin with the “war on drugs.” But as Illinois Public Radio's Brian Mackey tells us in our latest Illinois Issues In-Depth report — it’s going to take more than looser drug laws to relieve crowding in Illinois prisons.

Brian Mackey formerly reported on state government and politics for NPR Illinois and a dozen other public radio stations across the state. Before that, he was A&E editor at The State Journal-Register and Statehouse bureau chief for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.
