Stopgap spending plan won’t help DMV mail renewal reminders

A stopgap budget plan moving through the General Assembly won't be enough for Illinois' Secretary of State to resume mailing reminders of expiring driver's license stickers.

Because of the budget impasse, the office announced in September that it would stop sending the notices via "snail mail."  A stopgap spending plan will give the Secretary of State an infusion of ten million dollars.  But spokesman Dave Druker says the office will not use it on the reminders.

"Not at this point. We thought paying the landlords and the utilities rated as a higher priority."

Druker says Illinois is behind paying rent on more than 100 buildings that serve as motor vehicle facilities.  And it hasn't paid utility bills in about six months.

Springfield's power company , City Water Light and Power, is owed millions of dollars.

People can check the sticker on their license plates for when they're set to expire, and the Secretary of State sends notices via e-mail.  You can register online  www.cyberdriveillinois.com
