applawyers.org

Former Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Fitzgerald has died.  In more than three decades as a judge, he cleaned up the scandal-plagued traffic courts in Cook County, led one of the first reviews of Illinois’ mistake-prone death penalty system, and presided over the impeachment trial of Governor Rod Blagojevich. Fitzgerald left the court in 2010 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.  A court spokeswoman says he died Sunday at the age of 74.

Brian Mackey formerly reported on state government and politics for NPR Illinois and a dozen other public radio stations across the state. Before that, he was A&E editor at The State Journal-Register and Statehouse bureau chief for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.
