As a legislator, Frank Mautino says he has read 2,000 Illinois government audits in the past 18 years. Soon the state representative from Spring Valley will conduct them.
Mautino was named auditor general last week. He replaces 23-year veteran William Holland, who is retiring at the end of the year.
The auditor general conducts about 150 examinations a year of operations funded by taxpayer money.
Mautino says the post represents "the only truly independent set of eyes on state government spending."
Mautino, a Democrat, says his impartiality is evident in major legislation he sponsored that required bringing disparate political and geographic groups to consensus.
