Black Hawk statue renovations set to finish

peace.maripo.com

OREGON, Ill. (AP) - Engineers working to restore a 48-foot tall statue of a Native American in northern Illinois say work should be finished next summer. Amy Lamb-Woods is project engineer for the Chicago-based studio and engineering firm that the state hired to repair the 104-year-old Black Hawk statue. She says workers started cleaning the statue this summer and are doing tests to see what materials are best for repairs. The statue stands on a bluff overlooking the Rock River at Lowden State Park. The statue is on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. Landmarks Illinois put the statue on its list of Illinois' most endangered historic places in April.  A group raising money for the renovations says it has nearly $750,000 of the estimated $825,000 needed.
