Eastern Illinois slated to get a new recreational rail trail

Backers of a new rail trail between Urbana and Kickapoo State Park in eastern Illinois say they have funding for the first section and could start building next year. The executive director with the Vermilion County Conservation District says work could begin on the Kickapoo Rail Trail as early as spring. Work will start from the east near Danville and the first phase will run to Oakwood. Oakwood is about 25 miles east of Urbana. Organizers say work on that first section should take about a year. The trail will eventually run close to 30 miles along the former rail line near U.S Highway 150. The estimated cost of construction is about $1.6 million.
