Funeral services set for late Illinois state representative

Funeral services will be next week for late state Rep. Esther Golar. Chicago funeral home A.A Rayner & Sons says visitation is Monday. The wake and funeral are Tuesday at Trinity United Church of Christ where Golar was a member. She died this week at age 71.

The Chicago Democrat was appointed in 2005 and represented segments of the Southwest Side.

Golar was in Springfield this month to vote on legislation stopping service cuts to the poor, elderly and disabled. Lawmakers say Golar made the trip while ill and was brought to the Capitol in a wheelchair.

She was known for singing on the House floor. She broke into song in May while opposing legislation limiting collective bargaining rights.

Gov. Bruce Rauner remembered Golar as a community "pillar of strength."
