18th District Congressional Candidates square off

Peoria Public Radio

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Two candidates seeking to serve the remainder of former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock's term offered up different views on how to improve the economy of the 18th Congressional District during a debate. Republican Illinois State Sen. Darin LaHood said Wednesday that the best way to spur economic growth is tax reform, regulation reform and reducing labor costs. Democrat Rob Mellon of Quincy contended lower labor costs only benefit the wealthy. The two candidates also addressed immigration, gay marriage and gun control during the hour-long debate in Springfield. The candidates face off again tonight on WEEK-TV at 7:00p.m. The special election is Sept. 10th.
