Governor Bruce Rauner signed a bill into law Wednesday that aims to reduce incidences of elder abuse.
The bipartisan legislation sponsored by State Rep. Mike Unes, R-East Peoria, allows agencies to look into financial records of people they serve with state programs.
Unes says this will make it easier to spot and investigate incidents of banking fraud and exploitation of the elderly and disabled.
"We also know this kind of abuse often means additional strain on public support systems, so we hope that by curbing this type of abuse, we can save taxpayer dollars," Unes said in a press release.
