Senate confirms Scott AFB General nominations

United States Air Force

Two Generals from Scott Air Force Base, have won Senate confirmation to their next positions. St. Louis Public Radio’s Jim Howard reports.

General Paul Selva has been confirmed to be the next Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He’s currently serving as the Commander of the U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base. The Senate also confirmed General Darren McDew to take over for Selva as head of the Transportation Command. McDew is currently in charge of the Air Mobility Command, also at Scott.

During his confirmation hearing, General Selva said, he views Russia, China, North Korea and Iran as greater threats to the U.S. than ISIS. He also says that sequestration is hurting the military’s readiness and training. McDew says the U.S. needs to confront the problem of cyber- attacks, which pose the threat of disrupting the military’s ability to ship equipment and supplies around the world.

Howard covers news from Washington, D.C., of importance to the St. Louis region. His beat includes following the legislative activities of area lawmakers on Capitol Hill as well as developments from The White House, Supreme Court and numerous federal agencies and departments. Prior to joining St. Louis Public Radio, he was a longtime newscaster and producer at NPR in Washington. Howard also has deep roots in the Midwest. Earlier in his career, he was statehouse bureau chief for Illinois Public Radio, where he directed news coverage of state government and politics for a 13-station network.
