Decatur Mayor Mike McElroy has died.

McElroy died Friday morning. The coroner says an ambulance brought McElroy to St. Mary's Hospital in cardiac arrest. He says emergency room physicians pronounced McElroy dead and he died of natural causes. Further details were not immediately available.

Gov. Bruce Rauner called McElroy "a champion for the city of Decatur."

Decatur Mayor Pro Tem Julie Moore-Wolfe says the city is "heartbroken." Decatur Police Chief Bradley Sweeney also confirmed the death "with much sorrow."

McElroy was elected mayor in 2009 and had been a City Council member since 2003. He lost a bid for the Illinois Senate in 2012.

The city's website says McElroy also was vice president of Skeff Distributing Co. in Decatur.
