Metra Chicago commuter trains are testing out allowing small pets for three months starting July 4. The Metra Board of Directors has approved the trial for small pets in carriers on weekend Rock Island trains. Metra started the trial after receiving a petition asking it to consider allowing small pets on trains.
Metra says it surveyed riders and many said they approved of the pilot program. Metra's Citizens Advisory Board also approved of trying the idea. Only small pets in enclosed protective carriers will be allowed. Carriers must fit on a single rider's lap or under a single seat at all times. Owners are responsible for pets and Metra has the right to remove disruptive passengers and pets. Metra's Rock Island line travels from downtown Chicago to Joliet.
