Academic group votes to censure U of I

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - A leading academic group has voted to censure the University of Illinois' flagship campus over its decision not to hire a professor following his anti-Israel Twitter messages. The membership of the American Association of University Professors voted Saturday at a meeting in Washington, D.C. Anita Levy of the association says the vote comes in reaction to the university rescinding Steven Salaita's job offer following his posts on Twitter concerning Israel and the West Bank. She says the association's concern is academic freedom and "the degree to which academic freedom is understood and respected" at the university. The university rescinded Salaita's job offer after some donors complained his tweets were anti-Semitic. He has since sued the school. University officials didn't immediately respond to a phone message and email seeking comment.
