An Associated Press reporter who was shot six times by an Afghan security officer while on assignment in Afghanistan has been honored by Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
The school announced Wednesday that veteran AP foreign correspondent Kathy Gannon will receive this year's James Foley Medal for Courage in Journalism.
Gannon and AP photographer AnjaNiedringhaus were covering presidential elections in eastern Afghanistan when the shooting happened in April 2014. Niedringhaus was killed and Gannon was badly wounded. She is still recovering from her injuries.
The award includes $5,000 and goes to journalists who display moral or physical courage in pursuit of a story.
Gannon continues to write about Afghanistan, which she has been reporting on for decades, along with the Middle East and Central Asia.
