Rauner begins anti-Democrat blitz, budget standoff begins

Illinois awaits a barrage of anti-Democrat political ads as Gov. Bruce Rauner insists his changes to Illinois' business and political climate are intertwined with finding a fair state budget solution.

He says the state needs term limits on officeholders and a revised way of drawing political districts as well as business-friendly reforms to end the "financial instability" that haunts Illinois.

Legislative Democrats want a tax increase to close a $3 billion gap in their proposed budget. Lawmakers left town Sunday without agreement. A spokesman for Chicago Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan says voters will balance ad messages with what their legislators tell them.

The summer could drag on. Without a budget deal by mid-July, paychecks will be affected; by early August, school funding would be disrupted.
