Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert is facing a federal charges filed by the U.S. attorney in Chicago.
The long-time Illinois congressman has been indicted for allegedly structuring cash withdrawals to evade reporting requirements and lying to the FBI about it.
The indictment claims that Hastert agreed to pay an unnamed individual 3.5 million dollars to compensate for past misdeeds, and paid about half of that from 2010 to 2014.
The U.S. Attorney’s office is not saying what misconduct Hastert was allegedly hoping to cover up.
