Belleville veteran of WWII to receive high school diploma

A 93-year-old World War II veteran from Belleville will receive his high school diploma during the Belleville West High School commencement.

Glenn Holtz will be presented with an honorary diploma Wednesday night. District 201 officials says a state law lets high schools give diplomas to people who dropped out of school to serve in World War II, Vietnam and Korea.

Superintendent Jeff Dosier says the district will have a seat for Holtz with students and a cap and gown.

Holtz earned a silver star and two bronze stars. He came back to southern Illinois after the war and worked his way up to become vice president and cashier of a bank. He says it always bothered him that he didn't have his high school diploma.
