Legislation that would allow terminally ill patients access to drugs that haven't received full federal approval is headed to Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner's desk.
The Illinois Senate approved the measure Tuesday with a 55-0 vote. It passed the House last month.
The "Right to Try" measure opens up the possibility for qualifying patients to ask drug companies for treatments that have at least passed the first stage of Food and Drug Administration testing.
At least 13 states in the past two years have passed Right to Try acts. Lawmakers in about 20 others are considering similar measures.
Arizona-based free market think tank Goldwater Institute has pushed for the measure in Illinois and other states.
