Naturalists say female turtles often cross roads in late spring and early summer as they travel to nesting sites.
Kevin Luby is a naturalist at the Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn. He says motorists who see a turtle should slow down and put on their flashers to alert other drivers. They may be able to position their car so the wheels don't crush the turtle.
If they can help, they should lift the turtle with one hand on either side of its body and carry it across the road in the direction it was traveling.
Luby says never lift a turtle by the tail, and avoid snapping or softshell turtles, which can bite.
