U of I to investigate football coach over player injury

The University of Illinois now says it plans an independent investigation of allegations that football coach Tim Beckman pressured an injured player to play and that the player was misled about the extent of his injuries.

The investigation comes after former offensive lineman Simon Cvijanovic accused Beckman of mishandling his injuries.

Frank Cvijanovic is Simon's father. He supports an investigation and says he hopes to see a major change in the overall culture of college football.  But from what he's seen so far, he says he's not optimistic.

"Honestly, I don't think there will be. Unless the financial aspects of college football change there's not going to be one.  There's too much money made by too few people and as a result it's what drives it."

Urbana campus spokeswoman Robin Kaler said Wednesday that Chancellor Phyllis Wise is deciding how that investigation will be conducted. But she said that an outside review is likely.

Kaler said information generated by the investigation probably will not be made public.  The National College Players Association has called for the public release of any findings.
