Rauner wants constitutional amendment to alter pensions

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner says he wants to change the Illinois constitution.  That’s in light of today’s Supreme Court decision striking down the state’s pension law.

Rauner says he’s pushing for a change that would allow state lawmakers to reduce future pension benefits.

“Rather than spending years in court. We’d rather do a constitutional referendum and try to clarify that benefits earned should be protected. But the future is unknown and it can be higher or lower. We believe that the taxpayers and employers deserve that flexibility.”

Changing the Illinois constitution would require support from lawmakers and voters.
