Governor Rauner reverses some budget cuts

Peoria Public Radio

Governor Bruce Rauner this morning decided to reverse $26 million of budget cuts he'd made in early April.

The governor's office says that's because of a new projection of higher income tax revenues. The cuts -- which took many by surprise -- affected statewide autism services, after-school programs for teens, and shut down the tobacco quitline.

Republican Representative Norine Hammond of Macomb says she's thrilled about it, on behalf of people who depend on those services. But that may only be temporary.

"They're breathing a sigh of relief. However, we're not out of the woods. To say that this is never going to happen again is never going to happen again, would be a disservice to these agencies. Because there is always that possibility."

Rauner's office says other cuts, which were part of an agreement between Republicans and Democrats, will stay in place.

And while the governor's office says no additional cuts will come this fiscal year, that ends in July.  Rauner's budget plan for next year proposes billions more in cuts.
