Settlement OK'd in dispute to put toxic waste over aquifer

A central Illinois county has approved a settlement with a landfill company, stemming from a dispute over failed plans to store toxic PCBs in the facility over an aquifer.

Peoria-based Area Disposal had tried for years to get state and federal permits to put PCBs at the Clinton Landfill. But last year, the state barred the plan, and a permit request was ignored by a federal agency. The company is no longer pursuing it.

The DeWitt County Board voted Thursday for the settlement with Area Disposal. The county will get $1 million in previously unpaid fees, and the company agrees it won't put PCBs in the landfill.

PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, were used in products such as paints and fluorescent lights, but were banned in 1979 after it was found they can cause cancer.
