Quincy teacher seeks Democratic nomination for Congressional seat

A high school history teacher is seeking the Democratic nomination for an Illinois Congressional seat in a district with a history of electing Republicans.

Rob Mellon says he supports collective bargaining, lower student loan interest rates, and equal pay for women for equal work.  Mellon believes ideas like those should appeal to middle class voters.

"I’m talking about helping their families. That’s all I’m interested in. I don’t think it’s a Democratic or Republican idea or cause. I think it’s an American cause and that’s what I’m interested in. I think that can resonate with them."

Mellon is from Quincy. This is not the first time he’s run for Congress. Mellon also sought the democratic nomination last year, but lost the primary to Darrel Miller.

Now a special election will be held to replace republican Aaron Schock, who resigned amidst allegations of corruption. The primary is scheduled for July seventh, followed by the general election on September 10th.
