Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has named an interim inspector general for Illinois while he considers a permanent replacement.
Rauner's office says attorney Thomas Klein will temporarily assume responsibilities in the watchdog role.
Ricardo Meza stepped down last week to join a Chicago law firm after serving in the post since 2010. His term was set to expire in 2018.
Meza has said the decision was motivated by his desire to "move on to the next chapter" and return to litigation work.
Klein has been a deputy inspector general responsible for directing investigations in the office's Springfield division. He previously served as an assistant attorney general and as general counsel for the Illinois Capital Development Board.
Rauner spokesman Lance Trover says the governor likely will announce a permanent replacement soon.
