The chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign says a plan to hire 500 new professors by 2020 may need rethinking amid state budget troubles.
Chancellor Phyllis Wise mentioned the hiring plan when talking about ways the school is looking at dealing with a 31.5% funding cut proposed by Gov. Bruce Rauner.
After a campus town hall meeting Thursday, Wise said that the university will likely slow down hiring and reach the goal in the next 10 years. The plan to bring aboard 500 new professors was announced in the 2013 strategic plan, and the school added 150 educators for the 2014-15 school year.
No other specific plans to deal with budget cuts were mentioned by Wise, but she said administrators would be "strategic" in the process.
