Ruling expected today about pension benefits

Peoria Public Radio

Wednesday, the Illinois Supreme Court will debate whether the state can reduce pension benefits of its employees.

Unions argue the state constitution says an employees’ retirement benefit cannot be diminished or impaired. Here’s Democratic Senate President John Cullerton.

“So if they find it constitutional, there’s a lot of savings. If they find it unconstitutional, hopefully they will tell us what’s wrong, why it’s unconstitutional which would inform us as to how we can perhaps find a bill which is constitutional.”

Illinois has a pension debt that’s more than 100-billion dollars.
