A measure that would require restaurants to clean play equipment at least once a day is under consideration in the Illinois House.
The legislation advanced Tuesday to the full Illinois House after a 9-7 vote in the Consumer Protection Committee.
Democratic state Rep. Michelle Mussman of Schaumburg says restaurant play areas are "ripe" for germs. She says the law is necessary to protect children and parents from sicknesses.
But Republican state Rep. Norine Hammond of Macomb says there's no guarantee play areas will stay clean through a full day of use by children. Illinois Retail Merchants Association general counsel Tanya Triche says it will be impossible for restaurants to comply with the law's standards.
