A cement company that closed its Dixon plant in 2008 amid the economic downturn says it's ready to reopen the northern Illinois facility.
St. Marys Cement Inc. plans to reopen in Dixon this spring. Company spokesman Steve Gallagher says the plant will reopen shortly after it is completely staffed by the end of March. He says it will have all required environmental permits in place. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency previously fined St. Marys and co-owner St. Barbara cement $800,000 for Clean Air Act violations.
The company says the decision was made based on increased demand. About 90 jobs were lost when the Dixon plan closed in 2008. Gallagher says the company plans to bring about 60 jobs to the area when the plant reopens.
