Senator Kirk among those who signed letter to Iran

Peoria Public Radio

The furor continues over that letter sent by Republican U.S. senators to Iranian leaders that was critical of President Barack Obama's stance on nuclear negotiations with that nation.

Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk signed the letter, and his colleague, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, calls it "a cynical effort by Republican Senators to undermine sensitive international negotiations."

Kirk is also being criticized by Democratic Congresswoman Robin Kelly. She says it is particularly disappointing that Kirk signed the letter, adding he failed to show the independence and thoughtfulness he promised when dealing with national security.

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth called Kirk's action "completely inappropriate."

In response, Kirk said the possible deal with Iran might overturn congressional action. He added U.S. sanctions shouldn't be weakened until Iran stops its nuclear weapons program and exporting terrorism.
