Governor Bruce Rauner says he will spend billions of dollars on infrastructure in the next four years.
The news was well received by his audience, the Illinois Asphalt Pavement Association.
"I'm very excited to be here because this is the turning point in Illinois history, and we are going to put more money into our infrastructure in the next four years than ever been done in Illinois history.”
But Rauner did not say where the money would come from. His budget proposes no new revenue.
Previously, a top budget aide said the governor wants to work with legislators to develop a long-term infrastructure program. So far they've been unable to reach an agreement on an immediate budget shortfall.
