A federal judge has granted more time to state attorneys to respond to an American Civil Liberties Union motion that the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services isn't adequately serving youth.
The ACLU filed the emergency motion last week, saying the agency has "dangerously inadequate" care and services. ACLU attorney Benjamin Wolf said in court on Thursday that the situation "is a crisis." He cited six different people running the agency over the last 15 months.
Assistant Attorney General Barbara Greenspan represented the state and asked U.S. District Court Judge Jorge Alonso for the extension. She says George Sheldon was recently appointed head of DCFS and needed time to be informed of the situation.
