Illinois health law sign-ups exceed 347,000

Federal officials say 347,300 Illinois residents signed up for private health insurance under President Barack Obama's law before Sunday's deadline.

The government released the marketplace enrollment estimate Wednesday. Jose Munoz of Get Covered Illinois says it shows the state's enrollment campaign was "incredibly successful."

The government is offering a grace period for people who started applications but couldn't finish them before the deadline. They now have until this coming Sunday. Others may qualify for a special enrollment period if they lose other coverage, move, get married or have a baby.

This was the second enrollment period under the health care law. Last time, more than 217,000 Illinoisans signed up for coverage. The law offers subsidized private coverage to people who don't have health insurance on the job.
