Lawmaker trying to ban conversion therapy for minors

A state representative from Chicago is trying again to ban conversion therapy for minors in Illinois. The practice uses counseling to sway youth away from same-sex attraction.

Psychology groups say that conversion therapy is risky, which is why the CEO of Equality Illinois, Bernard Cherkasov says he wants it banned.

"Individuals who undergo this so-called therapy attempt suicide or experience depression at rates that are much higher than those individuals who don't go through this so-called therapy.”

Religious activists, as well as former homosexuals, opposed it. They say a person's sexual orientation can be changed.
