A Cook County judge has approved the first use of cameras inside a county criminal courtroom.
Judge Timothy Joyce ruled Tuesday that news media may televise and photograph next month's sentencing of two men convicted of killing an off-duty Chicago police officer in 2010. Attorneys for the two men had objected. But Joyce says he's confident he can ensure the "proceedings remain dignified." He says the public is entitled to see "how these things get resolved."
The Illinois Supreme Court ruled in December to allow the use of cameras and audio recording devices in Cook County courts on an experimental basis. Cook County is the largest of dozens of counties statewide to join a state high court camera pilot program that launched in 2012.
